ALEX T. JOHNSON –Mr. Johnson serves as Policy Advisor for Media Freedom, Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) participating States of the Mediterranean (Cyprus, Greece, Malta and Turkey), Mediterranean Partners for Cooperation (Algeria, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Tunisia and Morocco) and Georgia. He first joined the Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe as a Policy Advisor in November 2007. Mr. Johnson has served two tours as Representative of the Helsinki Commission at the United States Mission to the OSCE (USOSCE) in Vienna, Austria (2010-2012 and 2013-2014) where he facilitated congressional engagement and monitored activities of the OSCE Permanent Council and related institutions.
Mr. Johnson is an expert in multilateral diplomacy with extensive experience in civil society partnerships with diverse identity communities. In his years of service at the Commission, Mr. Johnson has supported the U.S. Delegation to the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly (OSCE PA) through the activities of American OSCE PA officers and special representatives. Additionally, he has contributed to the Commission’s expertise in OSCE institutional issues, human trafficking, labor migration, tolerance/non-discrimination initiatives, environmental human rights and regional environmental cooperation.
Prior joining the Commission, Mr. Johnson served as Policy Advisor to U.S. Representative Alcee L. Hastings (D-FL-20). He was a Congressional Black Caucus Foundation Fellow in 2006 and has also served as a consultant for a variety of local government initiatives in Portland and Corvallis, Oregon.
Mr. Johnson holds a B.S. in Natural Resources: Cultural Dimensions in Recreation and a Master of Public Policy, both from Oregon State University. His research experience includes publications on higher education diversity policies, environmental NGO development in Bulgaria, and U.S. environmental justice policies.
